A measured, gradual approach.
Give about **1.0 to 1.8% of the animal’s live body weight per day** as concentrate feed, alongside fodder. Stay closer to the lower end when good-quality green fodder or silage is available, and increase towards the upper end when the animal is mainly on straw or lower-quality dry roughage. For example, a **300 kg bull may receive about 3.0 to 5.4 kg per day**, depending on the quality of the forage and the overall ration. Do not increase the amount suddenly. Build up gradually to the required level over about **10 to 14 days**. Weigh the animal at the start and again every few weeks so you can monitor actual weight gain and adjust the feeding level accordingly.
Never give a large amount of feed at once to an animal that is not used to it. Keep dry fodder and clean water in front of the bull at all times. If it stops eating or its belly swells, stop the feed and call a vet.
